Earth Day 2008 is a far cry from its launch in 1970. Then, Earth Day was a protest against corporate environmental misconduct and the stench of environmental pollution embraced as “the whiff of prosperity.” Today, Earth Day has become a marketing strategy to sell the ‘green’ side of everything from SUVs, to snack food, to 1-800-flowers. Wind power is our “really big agenda.” On a day-to-day level we push our little Earth-saving agendas. We put our recycle bins by the curb each week and pat ourselves on the back for a job well done. Yet every once in a while in our time-poor busy lives, we wonder – Does it really matter whether I wash that one sticky peanut butter jar and put it out to recycle or just toss into the trash as is?…. KiteShip Corporation founders Dave Culp, and Dean Jordan plan to build kites as large as a football field to power cargo ships and oil tankers. Unlike traditional sails which require masts and specialized rigging, the kite could be easily attached to an existing ship and moved from one vessel to another in a commercial fleet. Using a KiteShip kite along with traditional engine power, could provide fuel savings of between 15-30 percent. (more…)
